Do transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) affect the toxicity of nanoplastics on Chaetoceros neogracile? ArchiMer

The potential presence of nanoplastics (NP) in aquatic environments represents a growing concern regarding their possible effects on aquatic organisms. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of polystyrene (PS) amino-modified particles (50  nm PSNH2) on the cellular and metabolic responses of the diatom Chaetoceros neogracile cultures at two essential phases of the growth cycle, i.e. exponential (division) and stationary (storage) phases. Both cultures were exposed for 4 days to low (0.05 μg mL−1) and high (5 μg mL−1) concentrations of PS-NH2. Exposure to NP impaired more drastically the major cellular and physiological parameters during exponential phase than during the stationary phase. Only an increase in ROS production was observed at...

Feeding strategy of Downs herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.) in the English Channel and North Sea ArchiMer

This study aims to characterize the larval feeding strategy of the Downs sub-population of North Sea herring (Clupea harengus L.). Diet composition, vacuity rate and prey selectivity of larvae from 8 to 15 mm collected during the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) - MIK sampling from 2008 to 2013 were assessed by direct observation of their gut contents using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The high contribution of protists and small zooplanktonic prey observed in the gut contents proved the relevance of SEM to study the diet of first feeding larvae. The relatively low vacuity rate of 45% suggests that food may not be a limiting factor for Downs herring larvae in winter. These larvae appeared to be omnivorous and there was a clear shift in term...

Feeding strategy of Downs herring larvae in the English Channel and North Sea ArchiMer
Denis, Jeremy; Vallet, Carole; Vincent, Dorothée; Courcot, Lucie; Marchal, Paul; Loots, Christophe.
The aim of this study was to characterize the feeding strategy of Downs herring larvae at "critical period" during winter in the English Channel and North Sea was defined to assess whether nutrition is responsible for low recruitment in stocks over the past years. Data collected during the French part of the International Bottom Trawl Survey from 2008 to 2014 were used to analyse fish larvae diet by direct observation using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Gut content methods generally used for copepods was adapted to fish larvae to assess phytoplankton ingestion. The relative importance of small preys (0,5-375µm) observed in gut contents proved the essential role of SEM to better acknowledge Downs herring diet. We demonstrated that Downs herring larvae...

Impact of the Phaeocystis globosa spring bloom on the intertidal benthic compartment in the eastern English Channel: A synthesis ArchiMer

From 1999 to 2005, studies carried out in the frame of regional and national French programs aimed to determine whether the Phaeocystis globosa bloom affected the intertidal benthic communities of the French coast of the eastern English Channel in terms of composition and/or functioning. Study sites were chosen to cover most of the typical shore types encountered on this coast (a rocky shore, an exposed sandy beach and a small estuary). Both the presence of active Phaeocystis cells and their degradation product (foam) did have a significant impact on the studied shores. The primary production and growth rates of the kelp Saccharina latissima decreased during the bloom because of a shortage of fight and nutrient for the macroalgae. On sandy sediments, the...
